A Penny for your thoughts

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

A "penny" is a common coin in many countries including Canada and the U.S.A. One penny is one cent, or 1/100 of one dollar. Other coins you might find are a nickel (five cents), a dime (ten cents) and a quarter (25 cents). In Canada, they have a loonie (one dollar) and even a toonie (two dollars)!

So, what does the expression "a penny for your thoughts" mean?

Does it mean to make a wish? Or does it mean my thoughts are not important?

Actually it means, "What are you thinking?"

A penny for your thoughts is a casual way to ask someone what they are thinking about. For example:

Archie: Hi Betty.

Betty: Oh ... hey Archie.

Archie: You look worried. A penny for your thoughts.

Betty: Oh it's nothing. I'm just worried about the science test.

So the next time you want to know what someone is thinking about, try asking them ... a penny for your thoughts.

(P.S. You don't have to give them a penny!)
